SIGIRIYA (LION'S ROCK), SRILANKA

Sigiriya is UNESCO listed World Heritage Site. It is considered as one of the best examples of ancient urban planning. This site is the most visited site in Sri Lanka.

Sigiriya is located in the central Matale District of Sri Lanka, near town of Dambulla of the central province. This site was built by parricidal King Kassapa (477-495 CE) for his new capital. He built this site on the summit of a granite peak standing some 200 metres (660 feet) high. The sides of this rock were decorated with corolful frescoes.

On a small plateau about halfway up the side of this rock there is a gateway in the form of an enormous lion. This is the reason this place is also known as "the Lion Rock". This rock is surronded by jungle and was used as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century.
