RIO DE JANEIRO

Image
On the North Eastern coast of Brazil lies the state of Rio de Janeiro, which has a capital city of the very same name. This city is well known for a number of things, including the stunning mountains that surround it, great carnivals and of course the statue of Christ the Redeemer that overlooks the city below. Rio de Janeiro’s most famous feature, however, has to be its harbor, which formed entirely naturally and was colonized in the 16th century by Portuguese explorers. Rio bay holds many illusions. Rio is a natural wonder because there are so many ways to look at the harbor and see different things. Some of the first explorers thought it looked like the mouth of some giant river! The giant mountains by it help deceive your eyes to make it seem like a lake. When you first come into view of the harbor you see such strange shapes, and forms that everything looks like something else. There are many magnificent mountains around the bay. Some of the mountains are low and run str...

The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching for over 2,600 kilometres (1,600 mi) over an area of approximately 344,400 square kilometres (133,000 sq mi). The reef is located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland in north-east Australia. The Great Barrier Reef can be seen from outer space and is the world's biggest single structure made by living organisms. This reef structure is composed of and built by billions of tiny organisms, known as coral polyps. It supports a wide diversity of life and was selected as a World Heritage Site in 1981. CNN labeled it one of the seven natural wonders of the world. The Queensland National Trust named it a state icon of Queensland.

PARICUTIN VOLCANO

Image
Parícutin  is a  cinder cone   volcano  in the  Mexican  state of  Michoacán , close to a  lava -covered village of the same name. This volcano is unique from others because its formation was witnessed from its very inception. It is one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Three weeks before the actual eruption, rumbling noises that resembled thunder were heard by people near Parícutin village. These were actually deep earthquakes. Much of the volcano's growth occurred during its first year, while it was still in the explosive pyroclastic phase. The nearby villages Parícutin (after which the volcano was named) and San Juan Parangaricutiro were both buried in lava and ash; the residents relocated to vacant land nearby. At the end of this phase, after roughly one year, the volcano reached the height of 336 metres (1,102 feet). For the next eight years the volcano continued erupting by relatively quiet eruptions of lava th...

AURORA BOREALIS

Image
An aurora is a natural light display in the sky particularly in the high latitude (Arctic and Antarctic) regions, caused by the collision of energetic charged particles with atoms in the high altitude atmosphere (thermosphere). The charged particles originate in the magnetosphere and solar wind and, on Earth, are directed by the Earth's magnetic field into the atmosphere. The auroras are also known as the Northern Lights. They are naturally occurring lights that create intriguing and spectacular displays in the sky. The aurora lights frequently appear as diffused glow lighting up the horizon. The most amazing sight is when the northern lights appears as waves across the sky; it is almost as if the lights are dancing.
